Tideline workshop log

Small repairs, slow builds, and what went wrong along the way.

Re-gluing a split cedar soundboard

September 28

The crack ran about nine centimetres along the grain. Hide glue, two cauls and a go-bar deck did the job; the trick was warming the joint first so the glue did not gel before the clamps were on. Left it for a full day before scraping the squeeze-out.

A shooting board that finally stays square

September 14

Third attempt. The first two drifted because the fence was screwed into end grain. This one has the fence housed in a shallow dado and pinned with a dowel, so it can be trued with a shaving and locked again.

Notes on drying oak offcuts

August 30

Weighed twelve offcuts every week since May. The thin ones stopped losing weight after seven weeks; the thick blocks are still moving. More about the log.
